The fan in the cinema

Once again, our monthly post revolves around that passion we share: fans. Let's see how much we like them!

In the previous post, we looked at its role throughout the history of art, which made us find out that it had been present in many movements. But, this time, we are going to delve fully into another of the things we like the most: cinema.

How many times have we seen a classic Spanish film and noticed those village ladies who fan themselves on their chests while the scene unfolds? Well today is your day. Today they take center stage thanks to their most faithful companion: their dilapidated fan.

There are numerous references to the range that we find in the cinema, although we are not satisfied with just anything. Therefore, we wanted to show you the best examples we have found

To begin with, we loved a small film that was one of the first to be made in the history of cinema. Can you guess who could be behind a work like this? Well, of course, the wonderful George Meliés (let's not forget that we are super fans of this pioneer of cinema). The name of the mini film is Le merveilleux éventail vivant , and it is from the year 1904. If you spend three and a half minutes watching the video hidden behind the link below, you will be amazed: LE MERVEILLEUX ÉVENTAIL VIVANT .

We, at no time could we have imagined for that great element to appear on the scene, but the name of the film caught our attention and we were waiting for it from minute one. A large seven-rod fan with a very rococo style suddenly appears before the two main characters of the story. But hey, it doesn't end here! You won't believe it, but rods turn into women. And you will say: very nice, but what does that mean? Well, for us, it is a way of representing and praising that great femininity that is associated with the fan. And we couldn't like it more.

Another of our choices is the film Lady Winmere's Fan , by Ernst Lubich, 1925. It is from a few years later, but the story also revolves around the fan and we love it. Love, jealousy, infidelities... A lot of wrongs that are solved thanks to a blue fan of the protagonist, whose husband had given her for her recent birthday. If you like classic cinema as much as we do, you're already taking a while!

But these are not the only cinematographic references in the range in cinema. There are many more waiting to be discovered. Of course, we cannot end this post without making a very special mention of the Association of Women Filmmakers and Audiovisual Media (CIMA), which, at the 32nd Goya Awards gala, distributed red fans to all attendees with the motto #MASWOMEN. A clear demand in favor of the presence of women in cinema. A cry in favor of the need for women scriptwriters and directors who build female characters that forever overthrow the sexist model of victimized, dependent or evil women.

See you in the next post with more curiosities about the figure of the fan.
